A
road accident can happen quicker than you think. All it takes is just one little
moment of carelessness. Even those who think they can rule out their own carelessness
cannot always avoid an accident. No matter how much experience the individual
road user has or how carefully he or she drives, not all potential situations
are foreseeable or, above all, controllable:
Bad roads, defective or lacking road signs, inadequate lighting and, of course,
last but not least, other road users can quickly provoke an accident.
According to the last public Spanish traffic statistics (covering the year
2005), 91,187 accidents involving physical injury occurred within 12 months,
where more than 130,000 people were critically injured in some cases and over
4,400 people died. On the basis of these figures one can only guess at the total
amount of potential accidents (including those that only cause minor bodywork
damage).
One thing for certain is that the public holidays or holidays starting all
over Spain at the same time cause an almost explosive-like increase in the volume
of traffic during these periods, where accidents quickly multiply.
Yet, despite this, the Spanish traffic statistics show that in a Europe-wide
comparison a disproportionately large number of accidents occur notwithstanding
these peaks. Given such high accident rates and taking into account the large
number of tourists and foreign residents residing in Spain, it is hardly surprising
that many of them are involved in accidents in Spain.
As if having to suffer an accident were not bad enough, the strain placed on
the person involved in the accident abroad is disparately even more severe.
